What documents do I need to gather if I plan on self-filing through an online service?
If you plan on filing your taxes through an online preparer, you will need several items on-hand before diving into the work.
- Income statements (often it's a W-2 if you are not self-employed)
- Information about money spent on children or dependents, homeownership, student loans, health care, investments, charitable donations, and documents on any federally-declared disasters that impacted you in 2021.
- A government-issued ID, like a driver's license or state-issued ID card.
- Your social security number.
- Your 2019 and 2020 federal and state tax returns (for reference).
- Any economic impact documentation, like IRS Notice 1444-C or IRS Letter 6475. (These documents help determine whether or not filers are eligible to claim Recovery Rebate Credits.)
Filers should also be aware of potential scams and ensure they are using reputable and trustworthy tax filing services. Many online systems have unexpected charges, even though they present themselves as free filing services.
