So when you buy steaks, chicken or eggs, do you look for that product of the USA label? You know, as a mark of quality? Well, you may have been duped. The U S Department of Agriculture wants to make it harder to slap that label. Product of the USA on meet. The agency is proposing a new requirement. It only wants producers to use that label if a cow or a chicken is born, raised, slaughtered and processed here in the United States and that would be a big change right now. Companies can put that label on meat from animals that were raised in a foreign country but slaughtered in the U S or even Meet that was butchered in a different country and repackaged here in the US. So you don't always know what you're getting. And this is important, consider beef. About 12% of what is eaten in the U S comes from countries like Australia, Canada and Brazil. This proposal is a long time coming the USDA commissioned a survey that showed about two thirds of shoppers thought if meat had that label product of the U S A, it was a sign that most or all of the meat production hadn't here in the U S that could change soon.
